Having built a prototype Android app several years ago, I decided to see what it would take to install a Android IDE on Ubuntu since the ADT for Eclipse is not the preferred environment. But the the official page says my version is not supported….

So I downloaded the Eclipse Installer from download “neon”
By default the installer installs Eclipse in /home/USERNAME/eclipse/WHICH_ECLIPSE_VERSION. For my laptop, I let it install Eclipse there.
In /usr/share/applications, I created eclipse-neon-java.desktop:
Comment=Integrated Development Environment
[Desktop Entry] Name=Eclipse-Java Type=Application Exec=/opt/eclipse-mars-java/eclipse Terminal=false Icon=/opt/eclipse-mars-java/icon.xpm Comment=Integrated Development Environment NoDisplay=false Categories=Development;IDE; Name[en]=Eclipse-Java
